Human Rights Council is UN’s “greatest failure: US

unUnited States Ambassador to the United Nations Nikki Haley has termed the Human Rights Council as the UN’s “greatest failure and that t?he Council has fallen short of its promise.

“It has taken the idea of human dignity…and it has reduced it to just another instrument of international politics. And that is a great tragedy,” she said defending her country’s decision to withdraw from the council. She said this auring a speech at American think-tank, The Heritage Foundation, on Wednesday.

The US has left the Human Rights Council on June 20, calling the council “cesspool of political bias”. The withdrawal came after UN High Commissioner for Human Rights Zeid bin Ra’ad al-Hussein criticised the Donald Trump administration for separating undocumented immigrant children from their parents at the US border.

Stating that members of me Council included some of the worst human rights violators – the dictatorships of Cuba, China and Venezuela all have seats on the Council, she said the presence of members from these countries supposedly tarnished the council’s credibility.

She also came down heavily on the council for inviting Venezuela President Nicolas Maduro, whom who she labelled a “dictator,” to address the body in 2015.

Haley said the council has focused its attention unfairly, and relentlessly on Israel meanwhile it ignored the misery, inflicted by regimes in Venezuela, Cuba, Zimbabwe and China.
