A hydroelectric dam in southeastern Laos collapsed leaving an unknown number of people dead and hundreds missing.
The state news agency has reported that the Xe-Pian Xe-Namnoy hydroelectric dam collapsed at 8 p.m. on Monday, releasing five billion cubic meters of water (about 175 billion cubic feet) and sweeping away homes in the southern province of Attapeu, lying along the country’s border with Vietnam and Cambodia.
Unofficial reports say more than 5000 people have rendered homeless.
It is said that heavy rain and flooding caused the mishap. The dam was being constructed by a South Korean company.
Top officials have rushed to the site and rescue operations are on, raports said.
