As many as 700 URLs have been blocked in India by social media platforms like Facebook and Twitter this year.
Minister for Electronics and IT Ravi Shankar Prasad said that the government has asked Facebook and Twitter to find solutions to ensure that rumours and fake news do not proliferate on their platforms.
Addressing the Rajya Sabha, he said the government was pressing for more accountability of social media companies.
The number of URLs blocked by Facebook was 499, YouTube 57, Twitter 88, Instagram 25 and Tumblr 28, he said.
In the recent times, there was widespread concern over spreading of fake news on social media sites such as Twitter, Facebook, and WhatsApp. Incidents of lynching were also linked to the spread of fake news.
He said the government had told these companies that India being an emerging digital power, they were free to do their business here, but technological solutions have to be found to check the menace of misuse of their platforms.
