DMK patriarch M Karunanidhi was laid to rest near his mentor CN Annadurai on the Marina Beach with full state honours.
The last journey of the DMK chief, who passed away on Tuesday, began at 4 pm from Rajaji Hall, where his mortal remains were placed for public viewing. The two kilometer funeral possession was witness to thousands of supporters. A sea of emotional party workers and supporters walked the two kilometres waving party flags.
Tamil Nadu Governor Banwarilal Purohit, Congress president Rahul Gandhi, Union Minister Pon. Radhakrishnan, Tamil Nadu Minister D Jayakumar, Andhra Pradesh Chief Minister N. Chandrababu Naidu were among others who were present in the funeral.

A large number of leaders including Prime Minister Narendra Modi, Tamil Nadu Governor Banwarilal Purohit, Chief Minister Edappadi Palaniswami, Deputy Chief Minister O. Panneerselvam, Congress president Rahul Gandhi, Kerala Chief Minister Pinarayi Vijayan, kerala Oppositon leader Ramesh Chennithala actors Rajinikanth, Kamal Haasan were among others who paid their last respects.
From the time of his death on Tuesday, a controversy had erupted over the burial at Marine Beach. The AIADMK government had rejected DMK’s request for allowing the burial of Karunanidhi on the famed Marina sands alongside his mentor and former chief minister C N Annadurai. Soon after the DMK approached the Madras High Court. The division bench of the Madras High court comprising Acting Chief Justice H G Ramesh and S S Sundar directed the State Government to allott land on Marina Beach for Karunanidhi’s burial. They passed the order on a petition filed by the DMK at a special hearing.
