Jalandhar Bishop Franco Mulakkal, who is accused of rape by a nun, has handed over his administrative responsibility of Jalandhar diocese to a senior priest, ahead of deposing before the investigating team probing the alleged rape.
Franco Mulakkal, head of the Roman Catholic Diocese in Jalandhar, has transferred his powers to vicar-general Mathew Kokkandam ahead of deposing before the investigating team probing his alleged rape of a nun.
“In my absence Msgr Mathew Kokkandam will administer the Diocese as in the normal practice when I am away from the Diocese,” Bishop Mulakkal said in a circular. However, the nuns protesting in Kochi for the arrest of Franco Mulakkal said they would continue with the protest till he is arrested.
Though Franco Mulakkal has stepped down from the responsibilities, he has not relinquished his post. They said that it was only a temporary transfer of charge to his subordinates till he is back.
Meanwhile, there are reports that Vatican has sought information from the church leadership in Kerala.
In the circular, the bishop said there were “several contradictions” in the evidences collected against him by the police probing the case. “I leave everything into the hand of God as I await the result of the findings of the team probing the allegation,” he said.
