Indian Telecom Minister Manoj Sinha has said that the rules to allow use of mobile phones and internet surfing during flights in the Indian airspace could come as early as January once the Law Ministry gives its concurrence.
He told reporters that the Telecom Ministry was currently awaiting the views of Law Ministry on in-flight connectivity rules and is hopeful of notifying the norms soon thereafter.
He said that once the permission of Law Ministry comes through, then the ministry can start with it. When asked if the ministry expects to notify the rules by the start of the new year, the minister said, he is hopeful that it will be the case.
It was in May that the Telecom Commission, which is the highest policy making body of Department of Telecom, cleared a proposal for allowing wider in flight connectivity.
On the coverage to territorial waters or Exclusive Economic Zone (EEZ), the Telecom Ministry is of the view that international best practices should be followed.
