Bengaluru: Female passengers who arrive at the Kempegowda International Airport in Bengaluru at any time, be it day or night, need not worry to travel home or to any destination. A cab service driven by female drivers has been flagged off at the international airport for female passengers.
With the airport being far from the main city centre, the cabs by women drivers is sure to be of a big help to many of the female passengers. As a first step, ten women cabs have been launched by the Karnataka Tourism Development Corporation along with Bangalore International Airport limited. In the coming days, there are plans to add more cabs to the fleet, the officials said.
The service of the cabs will be available 24 hours. Each Cab will have all modern safety measures. All the pink cabs will have GPRS facilities and an emergency SOS system, which gives an added safety for the passengers. The fare has been fixed at Rs 21.50 per kilometere in the day time and Rs 23.50 for the night service.
The drivers who have been selected for the cabs will have fluency in a multiple of languages. These women drivers will also be much familiar with the local area and also are trained in self defence, which gives added safety to the women passengers at all times.
Karnataka Tourism Development Corporation Managing Director Kumar Pushkar said that the pink cab service has been launched at the air port keeping in mind safe and secure transport for the women air travellers who reach the airport. Moreover, he said that it would also give more opportunities for women drivers. They can become self employed through this initiative, he added.
Almost all the drivers for the pink cab have been selected from the surrounding villages of the airport. The officials were of the view that such an endeavour would help the women from these villages to develop socially and economically. They said that this was only a small beginning that would help in empowering women.
They also maintained that many such all woman cab services had started in the past but were closed down. However, they hoped that the one started at the International Airport w2ould be in the business for years to come.
The intuitive for a woman driven cab started after reports of harassment faced by women passengers surfaced. There was also an instance when a passenger was asked to get off in the middle of the road after an altercation with a cab driver.
