Kochi: The Kerala government has accorded sanction for establishing MIT Super Fab Lab with advanced fabrication and machining capabilities at Kalamassery, Kochi.

The Kerala Startup Mission (KSUM) had engaged in collaboration with MIT’s Centre for Bits and Atoms to create a prototyping facility like what is available in MIT for its innovators. The Super Fab lab will have testing, designing and fabrication equipment and materials that cover microns to metres in fabrication size. The Super Fab lab will help the start-ups to work with accurate high speed machines and use a variety of available tools.

In the lab, the start-ups will be able to use metal fabrics, papers, polymer films and composites. At present the Fab Labs already established in Thiruvanathapuram and Kochi uses wood and plastic for prototyping.

The Kerala Startup mission had decided to collaborate with MIT, USA in an attempt to increase the hardware capabilities of the state and to facilitate the start-ups. The state that is rich in human workforce in IT sector had been concentrating on building up software and IT capabilities. However, the kerala Startup mission thought that there was a need for deeper interdependence between technology, hardware, software and IT. It was to bridge this gap that the Kerala Startup Mission decided to collaborate with MIT, USA to establish Fab labs in the state. The state has already established two Fab labs—one in Kochi and another in Thiruvanathapuram. Apart from this, the mission started 20 mini fab labs in technical colleges in the state.

And with the nod to establish a Super Fab lab, the sources said that it would give a major boost to the It sector in the state.
